Krispy Kroissant: Krispy Kreme's Baked Cronut

Even if you're not a hardcore foodie, I bet you've already heard of cronuts. These croissant and donut hybrid developed by Chef Dominique Ansel in New York didn't only take United States by storm, but had even inspired a good number of bakery and pastry shops in the country to offer this sweet caloric treat. And while there are already a lot of cronut versions within the Metro, Krispy Kreme, one if not the most successful donut brand in the Philippines, is now offering its baked ronut rendition -- the Krispy Kroissant.
Krispy Kreme Cronuts

Last week, before Maring and Habagat paid us a visit, a sweet treat from Krispy Kreme surprised my stressful day. Yes, it's none other than a box of Krispy Kroissant from the brand's Baked Creations line. And since it came in time for lunch, I sure didn't waste a minute and instantly dug in even before I ate my afternoon meal. Of course, I had another piece after the main course. In a nutshell, my three-course lunch looked something like this: Dessert → Entrée → Dessert. (Oh diba, ang saya?)

To be honest, I've only had a cronut once, from a coffee shop in Trinoma which I haven't even blogged yet. However, I think Krispy Kreme's Krispy Kroissant was definitely the cronut version that set up the bar for my cronut standards, and set it pretty high too.

Krispy Kreme's Krispy Kroissant

The Krispy Kroissant comes in four different flavors: Strawberry, Apple Cinnamon, Chocolate and Vanilla Cream. They're available at all Luzon branches for P70 each.

Krispy Kroissant Apple Cinnamon

Among the four flavors, my favorite is the Apple Cinnamon. It has a delicately sweet, tangy and earthy flavor, the right blend of apple and caramelized cinnamon sugar atop a soft and chewy yet slightly crispy and flaky croissant donut. I think those who appreciate subtle flavors will love this as a piece isn't overly sweet. I bet I can eat a box of six of these without having to run for a glass of water.

Krispy Kroissant Chocolate

Another flavor I really love is the Chocolate. Normally, when it comes to donuts, chocolate has been the one variant I shy away from. However, I instantly found myself hooked after getting a bite off my piece. The frosting you see here isn't just any chocolate mixture. It's Belgian chocolate ganache, sweet, a little bitter, and just oozing with orgasmic chocolatey goodness. And no, that chocolate topping isn't bitin (lacking). It might not be big, but it's thick and definitely potent in taste.

Just look at that creamy filling!
As for the two other flavors, it was my dad who had the Strawberry and he said it's pretty good with just the right blend of sweet and tangy. My mom on the other hand, had two of the Vanilla Cream pieces. She said it was sweet as the whole cronut is dipped in sugar glaze. However, since she's a fan of anything sweet, she liked it.

Overall, I'm impressed with Krispy Kreme's Krispy Kroissant. It would be better if it were crispier though, but for being a baked treat with a P70 price tag (other cronuts go beyond the P100 mark), I can't complain. And yes, I definitely see myself enjoying a piece or two with a cup of coffee, or probably taking home a box for the family.

    1. If you like donuts, croissants or even pastries in general, you might love it. Personally, I don't think it's worth all the hype, although I enjoy eating cronuts. It's hard to avoid a cronut craze though since every bakeshop offers limited quantities only.

  27. I've been longing to try these this new "fad". I guess it's really best to try my first cronut at Krispy Kreme. And given that these are quite expensive, I might try the Apple Cinnamon first, since it's the most recommended flavor by foodies including you. :)
