How to Take Your Love for Food to the Next Level

Tuesday, June 06, 2017
Food is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and it stirs an incredible passion in many people. Some prefer being in the kitchen, while others are in it for the satisfaction that comes from eating a truly amazing meal. However you prefer to express your love for food, here are some ideas for taking it to the next level, from one foodie to another.

Food

Cook Everything from Scratch

Preparing and cooking your meals from scratch is the fastest and easiest way to start producing cheaper and healthier food that tastes better than anything you’ll find on the shelves. The best part is that while cooking your food from scratch sounds like it should take a lot longer, this is often not the case. And when the prep time does take longer, it is more than apparent from the quality of the food you’ll be eating.

The benefits of a healthier diet are impossible to underestimate. And even for those already in excellent physical health, the benefits don’t stop there. There is mounting evidence that diet plays a big role in the regulation of mood, and may have profound effects on mental health. Keeping flour, sugar and yeast on hand opens up doors to baking your own bread, pies and pastries. These are also items you can buy in bulk and should last you a reasonable amount of time.

Contrary to what many people think, cheese, yogurt, and other dairy products are not difficult to make and the processes are fun and satisfying. If you have the money to spare, investing in a good dehumidifier is a good idea. A medium-priced one will pay for itself once you take into account all the summer fruits, vegetables and spices you can preserve. You can also produce your own jerky, raisins and other home-dried foods.

Expand your Palate

It’s very easy to fall into the habit of just eating the same foods over and over and never really experiencing anything new or exciting. Fortunately expanding your palate and experiencing new and exotic foods doesn’t require you to travel around the globe or spend every night at top restaurants.

One of the simplest things you can do to expand your palate is to simply pay attention to what you’re eating. Many of us eat in front of the television or computer and as a result, our brains are distracted and not focusing on the tastes of the food we eat. Try new recipes, and make sure when you sample the ingredients and the finished dish that you are fully focused.

When you eat out, ordering dishes that you don't usually get is also a good way to expand your palate. Ditch your old favorites for new exciting food, and you might just be rewarded with a whole new flavor profile you didn't know before.

Immerse Yourself in Food Culture

Whether it’s through television, books, the internet or picking up a food magazine because the magazine cover teases an interesting article, immersing yourself in the culture and community of food lovers will help you absorb the passion and ideas. Pick your preferred medium and get stuck in.

Sharing your love for food -- say posting the dishes you ordered at a restaurant on social media, or sharing recipes of your new creations will help you connect with the foodie community even further. You might even meet new friends who share the same passion for your favorite cuisines (which I can actually relate to as I have met wonderful friends through food blogging).

Food should be an unbridled pleasure for us all, but too often we don’t aside the time that we should to invest in it. Put food back in the center of your life and reap the rewards. As they say, food is love.
