Jack Frost: Sweet Homemade Premium Ice Cream

Tuesday, September 04, 2012
These past few months, I have found myself endlessly craving for cold and sweet comforting desserts like gelato and ice cream. And as if luck was on my side, I suddenly received a very timely invitation to try out a new brand of uniquely-flavored homemade sweet treats, Jack Frost Premium Ice Cream by Mr. Bonner Dytoc.
Jack Frost Ice Cream Flavors

It was a bright Saturday morning when we got to visit Mr. Dytoc's home in Quezon City where he personally welcomed and served us his creative ice cream concoctions. And although Jack Frost Premium Ice Cream is a new homemade ice cream brand not yet available in any stores or markets, Mr. Dytoc has already poured three years of research, experiment and practice to develop the signature flavors of his ice cream business.

Choco Glacier

Among the several premium ice cream flavors, I first tried the Choco Glacier, a blend of chocolate ice cream and refreshing choco mint pieces. Being a chocolate and mint lover, I can say that I really dig this fine ice cream creation. However, this might not be quite a nice choice for those who doesn't like a kick of cooling menthol in their chocolates.

Basil
Basil (Pint P200; Half-Gallon P700; Gallon P1,300)

Next, I got to try the Basil flavor. Yes, you read it right. It's really basil! At first, I couldn't believe it myself that someone would dare make an ice cream flavor out of basil leaves. But surprisingly, this turned out to be one of my favorites for the day. You'll really get to taste the fresh peppery basil flavor with a creamy, milky sweetness. It's not too overbearing to instantly throw you off, but it might not interest non-basil lovers. Personally, I'd eat this by itself, but I think this can also go really well with some crackers.

Blueberry Cheesecake

We then got to try the Blueberry Cheesecake which tasted exactly like blueberry cheesecake but in an ice cream form. This sweet and slightly tangy concoction even has generous amounts of blueberries, as well as crumbs of the cheesecake's graham crust, making this the perfect ice cream flavor for all my fellow cheesecake lovers.

Morning Rush

Since we had this ice cream tasting in the morning, I really appreciated that we got to try the Morning Rush flavor, a smooth and creamy coffee ice cream pimped with candied bacon bits. I never thought I'd ever have bacon in my ice cream, but I'm glad I got to try it. The coffee-flavored ice cream alone is already a winner since it had a harmonious balance of bitter and sweet. And although the bacon bits weren't the star in this concoction, you'd get to taste a hint of its sweet, savory flavor on succeeding spoonfuls.

Orange Rosemary

Another favorite of mine is the Orange Rosemary flavor, a creamy and refreshing treat which strongly reminded me of the Orange Swits jelly candy, just with a subtle hint of rosemary. This flavor had a zesty orange taste similar to orange sorbets. However, I love that this comes in a creamy, semi-solid foamed texture of a real ice cream.

After the ice cream tasting, I seriously had a hard time picking which one is my favorite of them all. However, if I really have to rank them, I think my winner would be the Basil followed by the Orange Rosemary and then the Blueberry Cheesecake. Don't get me wrong though, each and every flavor I got to taste was excellent in their own right.

Oreo Cheesecake Lemon Mint White Rock

Aside from the five flavors I got to try, Jack Frost Premium Ice Cream also has Cherry, Strawberry and Oreo under the Cheesecake Series, as well as Lemon Mint and White Rock flavors. And while this homemade premium ice cream brand is currently developing its packaging, it's also cooking up new flavors such as Rose, Green Apple, Peanut Butter & Jelly, Salted Butter Caramel, and Green Tea.

Since Jack Frost Premium Ice Cream isn't readily available yet in stores, it currently offers its goodies made-to-order with lead time of at least two days for pick-up or for delivery within selected areas in Metro Manila for a minimum purchase of P2,000.

So that wraps up my adventure with trying out Jack Frost's unique ice cream flavors. How about you, what's the weirdest and most unique ice cream flavor you've ever tried?
